Aizawai produce prote\u00ednas cristalinas, llamadas \u0431-endotoxinas, que tienen acci\u00f3n insecticida. Cuando una plaga de insectos ingiere las prote\u00ednas Cry de las hojas tratadas, su alimentaci\u00f3n se detiene en cuesti\u00f3n de minutos. Los cristales de la prote\u00edna se solubilizan en el intestino de la plaga y las c\u00e9lulas del intestino quedan irremediablemente da\u00f1adas. Una vez que se produce este da\u00f1o, las esporas Bt entran a trav\u00e9s de la pared intestinal y germinan r\u00e1pidamente causando la lisis del epitelio del est\u00f3mago.
